FCC Opens Up Television White Spaces for Innovative Broadband Applications

Washington DC (November 4, 2008) - The FCC voted today to approve rules opening up vacant portions of the television broadcast spectrum (the "white spaces") for use by unlicensed devices.  Because of its desirable propagation characteristics, white spaces will enable a wide range of innovative broadband applications that are not possible with existing unlicensed technologies such as Wi-Fi.

Beginning in 2006, WG has worked on behalf of clients Dell Inc. and Microsoft Corp., as well as a larger group of technology companies collectively known as the White Spaces Coalition, to help the FCC establish rules authorizing white space devices.  Today's decision allows Dell, Microsoft, and other companies to begin the process of bringing the benefits of white spaces broadband applications to millions of Americans.
